WHAT IS CUB SCOUTING?

The Purposes of Cub Scouting

Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped younger boys through Cub Scouting. It is a year-round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade. Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to achieve the purposes of Cub Scouting. Currently, Cub Scouting is the largest of the BSA's three membership divisions.

The 10 purposes of Cub Scouting are:

The Advancement Plan

Recognition is important to young boys. The Cub Scouting advancement plan provides fun for the boys, gives them a sense of personal achievement as they earn badges, and strengthens family understanding as adult family members work with boys on advancement projects.

Bobcat. The Bobcat rank is for all boys who join Cub Scouting.  They must earn this rank before any other.

Tiger Cub. The Tiger Cub program is for first grade boys and their adult partners. There are five Tiger Cub achievement areas. The Tiger Cub, working with his adult partner, completes 15 requirements within these areas to earn the Tiger Cub badge. These requirements consist of an exciting series of indoor and outdoor activities just right for a boy in the first grade.

Wolf.  The Wolf program is for second grade boys. To earn the Wolf badge, a boy must pass 12 achievements involving simple physical and mental skills.

Bear. The Bear rank is for third grade boys. There are 24 Bear achievements in four categories. The Cub Scout must complete 12 of these to earn the Bear badge. These requirements are somewhat more difficult and challenging than those for Wolf rank.

Webelos. This 2 year program is for boys who are in 4th and 5th grade.  This is the first step in his transition from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. As he completes the requirements found in the Webelos Handbook, he will work on activity badges and become familiar with the Boy Scout requirements all leading to the Arrow of Light Award.

SCOUTING FOR FOOD

Saturday, November 17th is the Scouting for Food Bag Pick-up Day.  Scouts and parents wishing to help with our annual “Good Turn” should be at the scout room for route assignments starting at 8:30 AM.  Please be safe when picking up the bags!  Look both ways before crossing the road!

Please send all your good thoughts to our fellow Chester Boy Scout who was injured last Saturday during the bag drop-off.  He is home from the hospital and doing fine.  We are all so thankful that he will be OK!

DEN NEWS

Den 1:  Den 1 is well on their way to achieving the Webelos Rank.  This month the boys will be receiving both their Citizen and their Fitness Webelos Activity Badges!  Great job boys!

Den 10:  The Wolves from Den 10 have been very busy working towards their Wolf Rank.  They have also done some really fun things like made a den flag and are currently designing and decorating walking sticks.  Be looking for these at the Blue and Gold when they bring them in to show them off!  Matthew and Nick, who are both new this year, have completed all the requirements of the Bobcat rank and will be receiving their rank tonight.  Kyle Eno has completed all the requirements of the “Leave No Trace” award for Cub Scouts.  Congratulations to all of you!
