Play Ball!

Communicator February 2005

FOCUS

This month boys will be enlightened to the themes and concepts of sportsmanship, fitness, and citizenship.

CORE VALUES

Some of the purposes of Cub Scouting developed through this month’s theme are:

ü       Health and Fitness, Through physical activity in games Cub Scouts will learn the importance of health and fitness in being able “to do your best.”

ü       Cooperation, is a key element in teamwork.  Scouts learn the importance of supporting each other through practicing kills needed in games, praising each other’s successes, and showing understanding and compassion about failures.

CUBMASTER’S CORNER

When you think of sports we think of playing the sport or rooting for our favorite team, but take a moment to stop and realize that sporting involves more that having athletic ability.  You must understand the rules of the game and work as a team member and not as an individual.  I am sure many have heard the phrase “you can’t spell team with an I”.  A good example of a group of men playing as a team is the New England Patriots.  Stop and think why they have won three Super Bowls in four years.  They play as a team and don’t buy into the “superstar” status.  Their successful model will be studied and used by many sporting teams.  In fact the Boston Red Sox have invited Patriot coach Bill Belichick to spring training to talk about how they handle winning and down playing the superstar status.

We should also emulate the players after a game when then meet and congratulate the winners and console the losers.  They also after a hard fought contest come together as brothers and pray to God.  A good scout does not boast in his victory or act unprofessional in defeat.  A scout should take the time and say, “I did my best.”

MARCH PACK MEETING SCHEDULE CHANGE

Tuesday, March 22nd 7PM at

Fellowship Bible Church

Rod & Gun Club Road off Rte. 102

 (Raymond side of town)

DUE to GOOD FRIDAY and EASTER HOLIDAY

Point To Ponder

When I was writing this month’s newsletter and preparing for the Pack meeting I realized that a Cubmaster could be considered an umpire or referee.

The job of the Cubmaster is to:

·         Keep the Pack striving to a set goal

·         Keep the Pack meeting moving

·         Handle Adult disagreements with diplomacy

·         Show a genuine caring and strive to best outcome

·         Make sure all scouts and dens play by the rules

A Pack should be looked at as a team and its success is the advancement of the scouts.  A Pack has a cheerleader, a financial advisor (treasurer), a rank leader (statistician), an umpire (Cubmaster), a general manager (the committee chairman), the fans (parents), and most importantly the players (Cub Scouts).
