PACK 163 COMMUNICATOR
Volume 1, Number 5, January 2005

SPREAD THE NEWS

Communicator Jan 2005

FOCUS

The focus this month is to demonstrate to the scouts that there are many ways to communicate and that there are many mediums used to communicate.

CORE VALUES

Some of the purposes of Cub Scouting developed through this month’s theme are:

ü       Personal Achievement, scouts are encouraged to experience the fun of learning something new about the different methods of communicating.

ü    Character development, the scouts will use good judgement when reporting about events.

Point To Ponder

Where we would be now if Alexander Gramma Bell did not invent the telephone?

Or if Marconi did not invent the radio?

Or General Electric did not invent the transmission tower and the transmitter?

Pack 163 Supports Our Troops

Pack 163 is sponsoring a unit of 21 men stationed in Iraq.  We are looking for supplies to send the troops.

The Pack also has a list of seven servicemen and women who are deployed in Iraq.

Remember our servicemen who are serving and who are home recovering from their wounds.

CUBMASTER’S CORNER

This month’s theme is about “Spreading the News” and we live in exciting times.  Think of the many ways that we get news – radio, television, email, websites,  cell phones, and from our neighbors.  We have become a society of “LIVE 24/7”.  The type of stories covered vary from the good to the bad.  We get news about tragedies – the war in Iraq, the Tsunami, the Presidential election, blizzards, hurricanes, etc.

The majority of my career had been working for WMUR-tv as a remote engineer and my primary responsibilities were to bring live coverage of news, sports, and weather to the viewers.  For the most part it was fun, but there was always the heartache as well.  I always had to think that any news story affected at least one person for good as well as bad.  The mentality of news is now “If it bleeds, it leads!”  I have seen a shift from good news to what is on today.  I guess there is enough blame to go around from the news organizations to the viewers and readers.

Let’s shift gears, and think how far we have come in short period of time.  Our great grandfathers only had letters, telegraphs, and newspapers..  The telephone, radio, and television evolved in the early twenith century and changed our lives forever.  Who would have thought we would get to see a man land on the moon live, or even get pictures from the Mars rovers.

The most important thing to keep in mind is what we hear is it correct or factual or is it done maliciously and spread by rumors.  We all now the telephone game, right?
